Understanding Hydrosols

Hydrosols are also known as floral waters or hydrolats and are produced through distillation of essential oils.

In a steam distillation method, the hydrosol is released (the water of the plant) and the essential oil floats on top and is siphoned off.  Some producers create hydrosols for their own unique benefits bi-passing the essential oils.

The term hydrosol means “water solution from hydro meaning water, and sol meaning solution”.1

CO2 extracts do not yield any hydrosol.

Hydrosols generally contain 1% or less of the volatile components of the plant, making them ideal for skin use.

The subtle fragrances of hydrosols have a soothing effect on the emotions and are hydrating to the skin.

Rose, geranium, Melissa, lavender, peppermint, sandalwood, frankincense or cucumber are all good choices and can be used by simply spraying the face and neck after cleansing.

Mixing essential oils into the hydrosol further enhances its effectiveness.  Always use organic hydrosols from trusted resources to not get any pesticide residue onto the skin.
